My work is primarily figurative, using collage imagery.
Figures and objects function as personal iconography
that takes on symbolic value. The juxtaposition of
representational objects within an abstracted space
situates statements derived from personal history, dreams,
and current sociocultural issues.
For this quilt, I chose to infuse a traditional quilting approach with a contemporary sensibility. I elected to use abstraction in the form of rectangles of fabric that
derive from different cultures to convey the brief yet powerful feeling of communion I experienced following the World Trade Center tragedy.
My artwork is direct and straightforward yet mysterious like an incomplete narrative. I prefer my work to have universal application based on an individual construction of meaning.
